POETRY

Throughout the novel Snow poetry plays a large role in the main character, Ka's, life. Poetry is alos revealed as a theme when Ka begins to write poetry again after a long writers block during which he failed to write even the slightest amount of poetry.  Author Orhan Pamuk directly addresses Ka's need for poetry as life changing events unfold around him. As Ka begins to write hi first poem in Kars, "It was like copying down a poem someone was whispering into his ear, but he gave the words on the page his full attention nevertheless. Because he'd never written a poem like this, in one flash of inspiration, without stopping..." (94). Poetry plays a large role in the novel because it is Ka's occupation and becomes a large part of his life again after arriving in Kars. He finds so many new sources of inspiration and everything seems right in his writing. poetry becomes thematic as is becomes more and more evident that the poetry isn't just art. It becomes a life form in which the events in Kars become more extreme.
